Day 2 September 30 2007

Slept in this a.m. Brilliantly sunny day. Had a nice walk downtown. Visited Temple Square, which as you might guess is immaculately kept. The Temple is not as large as we expected. Smaller than Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. We didn't go in. You have to be a very, very good Mormon to warrant that. And the Tabernacle is another building altogether and seems to be mainly devoted to choir activities.

For brunch, we met Marge, our former next-door neighbor in San Francisco who moved to Salt Lake City two years ago. She lived next door to us and we really miss her. And she is none too happy about living here either (no Neiman-Marcus or Saks!). But her children prevailed. She was occupied with church activities all morning, so we met her early afternoon for a sumptuous brunch at a very posh hotel -- Grand Americana -- which despite the name aspires to a European style. Many Venetian-glass chandeliers, lots of marble, and carved wood. Very Salt Lake City!!

Drove 300 miles along Hwy. 80. Ancient topography, much eroded. Small herds of pronghorn antelopes along the highway.

Tonight in the town of Rawlins, notable for its territorial prison. Skipping the tour tomorrow. There are still remnants of yesterday's snow.

Day 1 Sat Sept 29 2007

Day 1, Saturday 9/29/2007: 736 miles SF to Salt Lake City

As we began our ascent into the Sierras barely past Auburn, we started seeing snow from the previous night. By the time we got to Reno, there was evidence of quite an accumulation. Hwy. 80 was clear though.

Drive through Nevada was quite lovely. Lovely vistas of high desert with snowcapped peaks in the distance.

No cowboy sightings, although we noticed lots of guys wearing cowboy hats and sitting in front of video slot machines at various stops. And cigarette smoking is still alive and well in Nevada.

We did note this cowpoke at the Nevada/Utah border.

At the Utah border, a breathtaking panorama across the salt flats and a perfectly straight Hwy. 80 for miles and miles. The sun set as we were approaching Salt Lake City. And temps down in the 40s -- big surprise! Actually, much colder than we expected for the entire drive.
