Day 1 Sat Sept 29 2007

Day 1, Saturday 9/29/2007: 736 miles SF to Salt Lake City

As we began our ascent into the Sierras barely past Auburn, we started seeing snow from the previous night. By the time we got to Reno, there was evidence of quite an accumulation. Hwy. 80 was clear though.

Drive through Nevada was quite lovely. Lovely vistas of high desert with snowcapped peaks in the distance.

No cowboy sightings, although we noticed lots of guys wearing cowboy hats and sitting in front of video slot machines at various stops. And cigarette smoking is still alive and well in Nevada.

We did note this cowpoke at the Nevada/Utah border.

At the Utah border, a breathtaking panorama across the salt flats and a perfectly straight Hwy. 80 for miles and miles. The sun set as we were approaching Salt Lake City. And temps down in the 40s -- big surprise! Actually, much colder than we expected for the entire drive.
